VISMED single-dose vials are a wetting solution containing 0.18% hyaluronic acid and essential electrolytes. Hyaluronic acid helps retain moisture and transport nutrients. Biotechnologically produced hyaluronic acid solutions are very similar to natural tear fluid.
Approximately 15–17% of the general population suffers from keratoconjunctivitis sicca (dry eye). The causes can include, among others:
- hormonal changes
- Diseases such as diabetes mellitus, dermatological and rheumatic diseases, as well as radiation therapy to the head.
- Environmental factors, such as smoke, wind, dust and cold
- Screen work, also known as "eye office syndrome"
