Native to the Mediterranean and its tropical regions, the fruit of Citrus sinensis is called "sweet orange" to distinguish it from the "bitter orange" (Citrus aurantium). The orange tree originated between the Himalayas and southern China. It was the Portuguese who brought it to the region around 1400. Since then, its cultivation has spread to many countries. The sweet orange tree is a small tree of the Rutaceae family, an ancient hybrid that likely arose from a cross between Citrus maxima and Citrus reticulata.
