Description
Babyhaler, inhalation device, Gsk
Babyhaler is a device used in young children to allow inhalation of medicine. It features a soft face mask that can be easily applied to the baby's nose and mouth. Babyhaler helps you make sure that he gets the right dose of medicine.
How to use Babyhaler?
Before using the Babyhaler for the first time, read the instructions carefully. If you are not sure how to use Babyhaler, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice.
Checking the valves:
1. Before using the Babyhaler, check the correct operation of the two blue valves. Hold the Babyhaler with the face mask facing you. Press the mask onto your mouth. You should see at least part of each valve. Inhale and exhale gently through the face mask. When you exhale, the outer valve at the tip of the Babyhaler should move slightly. When you inhale, the inner valve should move slightly (if it doesn't, read the Checking the Valves section on the other side of the leaflet).
Aerosol preparation:
2. Remove the mouthpiece cap and shake the aerosol well.
3. Gently push the aerosol into its holder. The mouthpiece of the aerosol should be pointed at the Babyhaler.
Administration of the drug:
4. After the doctor tells the child how many doses of medicine to give, give each dose at the right time. Hold the child and make sure he is seated in a stable position.
5. Hold the Babyhaler at the level shown in the picture. Press the aerosol with the pouches once to release the dose of medicine in the Babyhaler. As soon as possible...
6. ... gently but firmly place the face mask on the child's nose and mouth. (Keep the Babyhaler in a comfortable position for both you and the baby). Hold this position until the child has breathed 5-10 times (about 15 seconds). You can count breaths by watching the valve movements with each breath. Then remove the mask from your child's face.
7. If the doctor prescribed two doses, repeat steps 5 and 6.
8. Remove the aerosol from the Babyhaler. Place the Babyhaler in the protective nylon bag. Place the mouthpiece cap on the inhaler.
If you find it difficult to use the Babyhaler when the baby is awake, you can try using it when the baby is asleep. In this case, it is important to maintain the Babyhaler level when you press the aerosol to release the medicine dose (see step 5).
How to clean Babyhaler?
It is important to clean the Babyhaler regularly - at least once a week. This means taking apart the Babyhaler, cleaning the parts and reassembling them.
Removing Babyhaler:
1. Check that the aerosol is not in the Babyhaler. Gently remove the face mask.
2. Remove the next part by pressing the clamps with your thumb and forefinger and gently remove the plastic parts.
3. To separate the two remaining parts, press the two clips and carefully remove them.
4. To remove the blue valve from the inside, gently squeeze the center of the blue valve with your thumb and forefinger and remove the holder. To avoid damaging the valves, always handle them with care and hold them by the center, not the edges.
5. To remove the outer blue valve, open its cover, squeeze the center of the valve gently and remove the holder.
Cleaning parts:
6. Clean the parts using a baby sterilization solution or tablets, or a mild soap. Then rinse the parts with lukewarm water. Valves must be handled with care.
7. Leave the pieces at room temperature until completely dry. Do not put them in a heated place for faster drying.
Reassembling the Babyhaler:
8. Both valves are identical, so it doesn't matter how they are placed. Take a valve by holding it by the center with your thumb and forefinger. Place the support on the center section.
9. Check that the valve is stretched. (If you are not sure, look at the pictures above how to check the correct positioning of the valves).
10. Place the other valve on the support. Check that it is well stretched. Close the outer valve cover.
11. Assemble the two parts together with the valves as shown in the picture. Make sure they are mounted.
12. Install the aerosol holder as shown in the picture. The two pieces should make a noise when closing. Make sure the aerosol holder and outer valve cap are facing up.
13. Fit the face mask. If you are not using the Babyhaler, put it in the nylon bag.
Checking the valves
To make sure your baby gets the right dose of medicine every time, you should check that the two valves of the Babyhaler are working properly each time you use it. Checking the valves, in this part of the leaflet, tells you how this should be done.
If a valve is not working properly, it may be:
- because it is not fitted correctly in the Babyhaler,
or because it is worn, damaged and needs to be replaced.
Checking the correct positioning of the valves
1. To check the outer valve, lift its cover and make sure it is extended.
2. To check the valve inside, remove the piece from the Babyhaler tip by pressing the clips next to the valve and carefully separate the two pieces. Make sure the valve is stretched. Then reassemble the two pieces.
3. Check the Babyhaler again (see Checking the valves on the other side of the leaflet). If one of the valves does not work, it must be replaced (see How to replace a valve).
How to replace a valve
Two spare valves are included in the Babyhaler box. All valves are identical. You can purchase more valves from the pharmacy.
1. Remove the broken valve.
2. Grab a new valve by gently squeezing between thumb and forefinger.
3. Put the valve in place. Check if it is stretched.
4. Reassemble the Babyhaler as shown in Reassembling the Babyhaler.
VALVE HANDLING
Always handle valves with care. Keep them at the center, not the edges.
Do not expose them to high temperatures, heat or cold. Do not put them in hot water.
Babyhaler may need to be replaced after 6 months of use.
