Indian frankincense (Boswellia serrata) is a small deciduous tree of the family Burseraceae, quite common in India, other species and varieties of Boswellia also occur in the Arabian Peninsula, Africa and China. The source of active substances produced by the plant is an oleoresin called frankincense. The resin is obtained by cutting the bark of the tree and then drying the resulting exudate. Crystals created in this way are still used as incense – hence the plant's name.
