Lysine is an essential amino acid that humans cannot produce on their own, but with many beneficial effects on health. Its amount in the diet determines how many other amino acids are incorporated into the body's tissues.

Why do we need lysine

The mechanism of action shows that the amino acid arginine supports the replication of the Herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1). Essential lysine and non-essential arginine are antagonistic amino acids because they compete in the body by sharing a common cation transporter. The latter acts as an antimetabolite of arginine, competing with arginine for reabsorption in the renal tubule, thereby increasing the amount of arginine. It also competes with arginine for absorption in the intestine and induces the enzyme arginase, which leads to competition with arginine for transport into cells.

1. Herpes simplex. Higher levels of lysine in an adequate dose (1-3g) reduce the availability of arginine and therefore the multiplication rate of HSV-1, which is used to prevent and accelerate the treatment of herpes, the treatment time of which can be shortened by up to half by taking lysine. It has been found that a dose below 500 mg of lysine is not sufficiently effective in this auxiliary phase of treatment. The recommended dose is 1000 mg 2 times a day.

2. The lack of lysine in the body also leads to reduced absorption of calcium from the diet. Its losses increase through renal excretion in the urine, which leads to thinning of the bones. Lysine supplementation helps to utilize the important calcium and increases its availability in the bones.

3. As an essential amino acid, lysine plays a key role in the proteosynthesis of collagen, the most widespread protein in the body. Mainly in cartilage, bones and skin. At the same time, it reduces its degradation and excretion, similar to calcium. Lysine supplementation reduces the risk of osteoporosis. It participates in the assimilation of calcium and collagen in bones and tendons.

4. Lack of lysine in the diet can lead to increased susceptibility to stress and anxiety. Lysine blocks 5-HT4 receptors for serotonin and prevents anxiety disorders.

5. The presence of lysine blocks the reaction of tissue proteins with sugars - the so-called glycation, when in prediabetes or poorly compensated type 2 diabetes, pro-inflammatory glycation products are formed from proteins by binding unused glucose molecules. This leads to well-known health complications such as neuropathy and retinopathy. This favorably affects the stabilization of blood sugar, glucose tolerance, glucagon activity and, subsequently, cardiovascular complications.

6. Research is being conducted on the practical use of lysine in oncology and in reducing high cholesterol. So far, this is based only on a few articles of synthesis.
