Folic acid is important for the normal growth of germinal tissue during pregnancy. A rich and varied diet can provide about 200 µg of folic acid per day, with the recommended daily intake being 400 µg for adults and 600-1000 µg for pregnant women. In classical poor folic acid metabolizers (heterozygotes) (about 50% of the population), the efficiency of the MTHFR enzyme is reduced to about 75%; in classical poor folic acid metabolizers (homozygotes) (about 10% of the population), the efficiency of the MTHFR enzyme is reduced to about 25%.

The intake of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) from the mother's body contributes to the normal development of the fetal brain in breastfed mothers and children. The beneficial effect is achieved by a daily intake of 200 mg of DHA in addition to the recommended daily dose of omega-3 fatty acids for adults, i.e. 250 mg of DHA and EPA.
