The cells inside the vaginal wall contain sugar, which is released during the normal elimination of the cells. This sugar is broken down into lactic acid by the lactic acid bacteria in the vagina. If enough lactic acid is present, the vaginal environment is naturally acidic, with a pH of 3.8-4.4. These represent unfavorable conditions for the development of unwanted bacteria. Therefore, an acidic vaginal environment helps prevent bacterial infections. The acidic vaginal environment can be disrupted by various external factors, causing the pH to rise above 4.5.
Possible factors include bodily secretions such as menstrual blood or semen, a low lactobacilli count due to antibiotics, and fluctuations in hormone levels during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or the use of female sex hormones. Under such conditions, the growth of unwanted germs in the vagina is favored. These germs can come from the area around the entrance to the vagina (eg, the anal region) and go up into the vagina, or they can be transmitted through sexual contact.
