Ostenil
Description Ostenil
The information in the FAQ section was created by the Liki24.at team and is based on the official manufacturer's manual
Ostenil is a pharmaceutical product used for the treatment of joint pain and stiffness, particularly in degenerative conditions such as osteoarthritis. The product contains sodium hyaluronate, a natural polysaccharide that plays an essential role in maintaining the viscoelastic properties of the synovial fluid in the joints.
Sodium hyaluronate is known for its lubricating and shock-relieving properties and is used in intra-articular infiltrations to improve joint function and reduce pain.
Forms of release
Ostenil is available as an isotonic, injectable solution in a sterile pre-filled syringe containing 20 mg of sodium hyaluronate per 2 ml of solution.
Ostenil is available in various strengths, including Ostenil Plus which contains 40 mg of sodium hyaluronate and 10 mg of mannitol per 2 ml of isotonic solution.
Indications for use
Ostenil and Ostenil Plus are indicated for patients suffering from joint pain caused by osteoarthritis and other degenerative joint conditions.
It is used to treat pain and stiffness caused by osteoarthritis in large synovial joints such as the knee, hip or shoulder.
Osteoarthritis is characterized by a progressive deterioration of joint cartilage and changes in the synovial fluid, which becomes less viscous and less able to protect and lubricate the joint. Hyaluronic acid injections restore the natural properties of the synovial fluid, thus relieving symptoms.
Ostenil improves joint function by:
- Restoring the viscoelasticity of synovial fluid, reducing friction between cartilage surfaces and absorbing mechanical shocks
- Stimulate cartilage regeneration - There is evidence to suggest that hyaluronic acid may stimulate the proliferation of cartilage cells (chondrocytes)
- Improve joint mobility and flexibility
Dosage regimen
The dosage of Ostenil depends on the stage of the condition and the joint affected.
In general, the treatment regimen involves 1 injection per week administered intra-articularly for 3-5 weeks, depending on the patient's clinical response and the severity of the condition. Treatment cycles may be repeated if necessary.
The Ostenil Plus formula with mannitol offers the option to reduce the number of injections to one injection per treatment cycle.
Contraindications
Ostenil is contraindicated in certain situations, including hypersensitivity to sodium hyaluronate or any of the ingredients.
Avoid using Ostenil in the presence of active infections in the treated joint.
Avoid injecting into blood vessels or adjacent tissue.
Features of use
Important! Ostenil may only be administered by qualified medical personnel under sterile conditions.
This injectable solution is intended exclusively for intra-articular administration, directly into the synovial space of affected joints.
Side-effects
Ostenil can cause side effects, although these are usually mild and temporary. These reactions tend to go away within a few days.
Possible side effects include:
- Pain and swelling at the injection site
- Minor fluid accumulation at the injection site
Much less common side effects include bleeding, numbness or ulceration of the treated joint.
Interactions with other medicines and foods
Ostenil has no known major interactions with other medicines, but it is recommended that patients inform their doctor about all the medicines they are taking before starting this treatment.
The concomitant use of other intra-articular treatments (e.g. corticosteroids) should also be carefully evaluated to avoid combined adverse effects.
Overdose
No cases of overdose have been reported in the use of Ostenil. However, taking too much solution into a single joint may cause pain and increased inflammation.
Storage conditions
Ostenil should be stored at temperatures below 25°C, away from light and frost. Pre-filled syringes should be kept in the original packaging until use to ensure sterility and protection of the solution. Ostenil should not be used after the expiry date printed on the packaging. Keep out of the reach of children.
