Hyaluronic acid for joint cartilage

Synovial fluid, which behaves viscoelastically due to its hyaluronic acid content, is found in all large and small synovial joints, i.e., in the hips, knees, shoulders, fingers, and toes. There, its lubricating and shock-absorbing properties ensure normal, pain-free movement and simultaneously supply the articular cartilage with nutrients.

In degenerative joint diseases, such as osteoarthritis, the viscoelasticity of the synovial fluid, and thus its lubricating and shock-absorbing effects, are reduced. The mechanical stress on the joint and the degeneration of the articular cartilage increase. This leads to pain and restricted mobility.

A qualitative improvement of the joint lubrication through the intra-articular administration of highly purified hyaluronic acid can improve the viscoelastic properties and thus its lubricating and shock-absorbing effect.
