Protexin

Protexin Veterinary is available in capsule or pellet form and comprises the following formulations:

• Protexin Cobalaplex for dogs and cats
• Protexin Veterinary Pro-Fibre for dogs
• Protexin Veterinary Pro-Enzorb 

The formula contains active ingredients such as cobalamin (vitamin B12), folic acid (vitamin B9), pancreatic digestive enzymes (lipase, amylase and protease), probiotics such as Enterococcus faecium and prebiotics from the Preplex® range, a combination of fructo-oligosaccharides and gum arabic. 

Protexin is indicated for the management of various digestive and metabolic disorders in dogs and cats. One of the main indications is exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, a condition characterised by insufficient secretion of the pancreatic enzymes necessary for the digestion of nutrients.

Protexin Cobalaplex is also useful in cases of hypocobalaminemia, frequently associated with chronic enteropathies or pancreatic insufficiency. 

Thanks to its probiotic and prebiotic content, Protexin Pro Fibre helps maintain a balance in the gut microbiota and reduce bacterial dysbiosis.

The dosage of Protexin probiotic should be adjusted according to the animal’s body weight and the vet’s recommendations. Generally, it is administered daily, in accordance with the following guidelines:

• animals under 10 kg: approximately half a capsule per day or one capsule every two days;
• animals between 10 and 20 kg: one capsule per day;
• animals over 20 kg: two capsules per day.

The capsules may be administered whole or opened, with the contents mixed into the food. In the case of preparations containing pancreatic enzymes, the capsules must be opened and the contents mixed evenly into the food to facilitate digestion.

Protexin for cats and dogs must not be administered to animals with known hypersensitivity to any of the product’s ingredients. 

Furthermore, it should be used with caution in animals with severe food allergies or those with acute gastrointestinal conditions requiring specific medical treatment.

The supplement should only be administered in accordance with the vet’s recommendation, particularly in animals with chronic conditions.

In the case of products containing pancreatic enzymes, the powder in the capsules may be irritating to the skin or mucous membranes, which is why careful handling and washing of hands after administration is recommended.

It is important that animals have constant access to fresh water and are monitored for any changes in appetite or stool consistency.

Protexin is generally well tolerated by dogs and cats when administered as recommended. Occasionally, mild digestive disturbances such as flatulence or temporary changes in stool consistency may occur, particularly at the start of treatment.

Allergic reactions are rare, but may include itching, skin rashes or digestive intolerance. 

Protexin can be administered alongside most veterinary diets and other digestive supplements. In some cases, it can be used in conjunction with antibiotics or anti-inflammatory treatments as part of a comprehensive treatment plan for gastrointestinal disorders.

However, concurrent use with other supplements containing high levels of B-complex vitamins or digestive enzymes should be monitored to avoid excessive administration.

Data on overdose are limited, but the administration of excessive amounts may cause digestive disorders such as diarrhoea or abdominal discomfort. 

In the event of accidental ingestion of very large doses, immediate consultation with a veterinary surgeon is recommended.

Protexin should be stored in its original packaging, in a cool, dry place, away from direct light and moisture. The optimal storage temperature is generally below 25°C.

The product must be kept out of the reach of children and animals. Once the packaging has been opened, it is recommended that the capsules be used within the period indicated by the manufacturer.
